Contributed Exhibits and Small is Beautiful

Exhibits can be put up in the Conference Room from 15.00 on Friday and should be ready for viewing by 17.30. Exhibits in the Conference Room can be viewed during the wine reception and tea breaks until the close of the meeting on Saturday; Small is Beautiful in the Library Foyer will run through March.
Please advise Becky Yahr by e-mail (
r.yahr@rbge.ac.uk) of your requirements for tables or display stands before Monday 16 January as these have to be ordered in advance, and arrange with her if you need access by car when bringing any bulky or heavy items.


The BLS AGM and British Lichen Conference 2020 will be held at the Herbarium Buildings, Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh EH3 5LR.

Inverleith Row is served by frequent Lothian buses nos 8, 23 and 27 from the city centre. Note that the main visitor entrance to the Garden is on Arboretum Place on the other side of the garden. There is limited, expensive and time-limited parking on surrounding streets, so public transport is recommended. Entrance will be through the black gates to the Science/Herbarium Buildings just north of 20 Inverleith Row (see downloadable map below).

Friday 31 January:

All day: Small is Beautiful - Library Foyer

17.30 – Reception (wine and soft drinks) with exhibits, poster presentations and artists demonstrations in the Conference Room.

18.30 – Special Lecture: Professor Peter Crittenden

Toughing it out: lichen ecology and a life in lichen research

On the occasion of Professor Peter Crittenden’s retirement as Editor in Chief of the Lichenologist.

19.45 – Dinner after the Special Lecture at the Little White Pig. Pre-bookings only. 26B Dublin Street, Edinburgh EH3 6NN. Lothian Bus service #8 from Warriston stop to stop YK and a short walk down Albany St to Dublin St. Last bus to be in time is 19.35.


Saturday 1 February:

9.45 – Coffee and tea, with exhibits, poster presentations and artists demonstrations in the Conference Room.

10.30 – BLS Annual General Meeting (see agenda below)

13.00 – Lunch (at own expense). Restaurants and cafes within a few minutes walking distance are situated within the gardens and around Inverleith Row.

14.00 Programme of Talks. Introduction – Becky Yahr, President of the Society

Sunday, 2 February:

Arniston House, Gorebridge. Park at the front of the house NT325595, outside loos available. We will meet at 10.00 (NB: the time published in the Bulletin was 11 am, but let’s make the most of the light) at the main car park, postcode for satnavs EH23 4RY. Most of the old trees are expected to the south and west of the house in the parkland, and in the woodland along the South Esk and Redside Burn), but trees along the avenues could also be old.

Nominations for Officers of the Society

Nominations are invited for Officers for 2020 and for three members of Council for the period 2020–2022 (retiring at the AGM held in early 2023, subject to changes in the Society’s Constitution). Proposals should be sent by e-mail or in writing to the Secretary (Sandy Coppins, 37 High Street, East Linton, East Lothian EH40 3AA, email secretary@britishlichensociety.org.uk) at least two weeks before the AGM. No person may be nominated without their consent. Andy Acton and Graham Boswell are due to retire from Council and are not eligible for re-election. We thank them for their service and support.
