Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte Group: Carrock Fell
22nd July 2021, 09:30
The Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte Group (CLBG) field trip to Carrock Fell is on Thursday 22nd July, meeting at 9:30am at NY353337 (map) where there is a reasonable amount of free parking on the roadside grass.
The lichen group aim to go up the steep path to the top of Carrock Fell to look for the montane lichens on the heath and rocks, probably with bilberries available for refreshment en route. The area is open access and is in the Skiddaw Group SSSI. Most of the top is Scheduled Monument hillfort. Recent visits there have found Arctoparmelia incurva, Cornicularia normoerica, Ochrolechia frigida, Umbilicaria proboscidea and Pseudephebe pubescens amongst others. Thamnolia vermicularis has been spotted on the next top, High Pike, but it would be great to find it on Carrock Fell.
The path up is a steep slither in places. Please take care clambering round the boulders at the top. There will be quite a lot of bracken around on the lower slopes. We should be prepared for all weathers. If dreadful, it might not be worth going up to the top.
Bring your own lunch. We will be asking you to sign in and provide contact details. Although Covid restrictions may have eased by then, please take sensible precautions. Please do not come if you have symptoms. No toilet facilities.
