Lichens in the Curriculum

Lichens are fascinating organisms, both aesthetically and biologically. The tiny scale at which lichens and their communities operate makes them an ideal subject matter to help explore the natural world around us.

Without travelling too far from your doorstep, armed with nothing more than a hand-lens, a whole new world in miniature awaits your discovery!

The projects and suggestions on these pages should be of interest to:

  • young people and adults interested in lichens
  • schools wanting to use lichens to encourage exploration of the natural world;
  • university and college students hoping to carry out a project on lichens;
  • community groups and field centres

For convenience they are organised into project materials for Schools and guidance for University students.
